Water level of the river Dharla and Brahmaputra have been swelling further for the last two days. The Brahmaputra raised 28cm above danger level at Chilmari point, Dharla 22cm at the Dharla Bridge point at 3.00pm on Saturday (June 18).

Fresh areas are being inundated with incessant of flood water by heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream. Scarcity of dry food, pure drinking water and fodder crisis are prevailing there.

More than one lac people of 125 villages under 30 unions of nine upazilas in the district are marooned with abnormally incessant of flooding water.

The flood situation of Roumari, Ulipur and Sadar upazila have been deteriorated. The plight of flood victims are increasing day by day. Crops on 3000 hectares of land are inundated. Around 40 educational institutes in the district shut due to flooding.

Some 22 feet flood control embankment at Mureahat area under Bamondanga union of Nageswari upazila washed away with strong current of flood water. Consequently, the crops of the area have gone under water. Rural roads have been collapsed. People have to go from one place to another by boat and banana made raft.

In this situation upazila administration distributed 6000 packets of dry food among flood hit poor people at Roumari and 5000 packets at Sadar upazila. Taka 20 lac and 400 MT rice is ready in district level, district Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Abdul Hye said.

Kurigram Sadar UNO Rashedul Hasan said we have visited in the flood affected areas. Rescue and dry food distribution activities are being conducted. We have adequate relief materials.

Deputy Director (DD) of Kurigram Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) agriculturist Abdur Rashid said the possibility of inundated crops in second spell of flood increased. It would be informed to higher authority after receding of flood water and estimated of loss as the farmers will get assistance under Flood Rehabilitation Program.
