In the third phase, there was a scuffle between the supporters of the defeated and winning councilor candidate of Ward No. 4 in Bogra’s Dhunat municipal election. Former BCL leader Al Masud, a supporter of the defeated candidate, has filed a case with Dhunat police station. Eight people, including newly elected councilor Ali Azgar Mannan, have been accused in the case.
Police arrested Abdus Sobhan, 60, a former army officer from Dhunat municipal area and sent him to Bogra District Jail on Monday afternoon. Earlier, a case was filed at Dhunat police station on Sunday night.
It is learned that the election was held on January 30 in Bogra’s Dhunat municipality. In that election, 4 candidates including Russell Mahmud Kamal (camel bird) and Ali Azgar Mannan (Punjabi) contested in ward no. Ali Azgar Mannan (Punjabi) won the election.
Meanwhile, on Saturday (January 30) at around 8 pm, al-Masud, a supporter of the defeated candidate, and the sons of Abdus Sobhan, a supporter of the winning candidate, had an argument over election issues. At one stage a fight broke out between the two sides. Jolly Khatun (40), Meghna Khatun (35), Rokeya Begum (55), Al Masud (36) and Shahinur Begum (25) were injured in the incident. The injured have been treated at Dhunat Upazila Health Complex and local clinic.
Ali Azgar Mannan, newly elected councilor of ward 4 of Dhunat municipality, said that Al Masood, a supporter of Russell Mahmud Kamal, who lost the election, has filed a false case against me and my supporters. They were not beaten.
Dhunat Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kripa Sindhu Bala said one of the accused in the post-election violence case has been arrested and sent to jail. Attempts are being made to arrest the other accused in the case.
