Two children died when an illegal sand pile excavated from the Padma River collapsed while they were playing of Ishwardi in Pabna. The incident took place at Jhowdia village under Sara union in Ishwardiupazila at around 7.00pm on Monday.
The deceased are Himel Rana,9, son of Ashraful Islam of Jhowdia village and Jihad Hossain,10, son of Asan Ali of the same village. They were students of third class of Panihata Government Primary School in the upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and police, Himel and Jihad were playing beside to the sand pile on the bank of the Padm River in the evening. Meanwhile, a huge pile of illegal sand brought from the Padma River collapsed on Himel and Jihad.
Sensing locals rushed to the spot and rescued them and took them to IshwardiUpazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC-Investigation) of Ishwardi Police Station Hasan Basir confirmed the matter.
