There has been a massive clash between the two sides over control of the Bogra District Motor Owners Group. At least 10 people, including a police journalist, were injured.

Police used batons and shotguns to bring the situation under control. The clash took place at Charmatha Central Bus Terminal in Bogra from 11:30 am on Tuesday.

Owners’ associations, police and eyewitnesses said there had been a long-running dispute between government party leaders and activists over control of the Bogra District Motor Owners Group. The Commerce Ministry has appointed Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Bogra as administrator on the direction of the High Court to resolve the dispute.

The additional district magistrate has already announced the election schedule. But Aminul Islam, former general secretary of the Motor Owners Group and vice-president of Sadar Thana Juba League, opposed the election and kept the office and goods of the Owners Group in his custody in the Charmatha Central Bus Terminal area of the city.
Manjurul Alam Mohan, former convener of the Motor Owners Group and joint general secretary of the district Awami League, and his followers visited the Charmatha area on Tuesday morning and announced the occupation of Aminul’s office. On hearing this news, the people of Juba League leader Aminul gathered in Charmatha area. They announced to Mike to resist the Mohan Group at any cost and called on the transport workers to take position with sticks in their hands.

Upon receiving the news, the police led by Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud and Sadar Police Station OC Humayun Kabir took position at Charmatha.
When the police offered Aminul a compromise, Aminul refused and said that he would resist the other party by showing strength.

At that time, the people of Aminul group started a procession in front of the police. About 2,000 leaders and activists of the Mohan Group took position in front of LGED near Charmatha on Santahar Road.
Police tried to keep both sides calm in the middle of the situation but at one point Mohan group broke the police barricade and chased Aminul group members. At that time both sides chased each other and there was extensive vandalism.

Vehicles plying on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway were vandalized at random. At one stage, the opponents vandalized the office of the motor owners group under Aminul’s control and set fire to Aminul’s private office next to it.
The chase and violence between the two sides lasted for about half an hour. GTV cameraman Raju Ahmed was severely beaten while taking pictures of the vandalism. Ramzan Ali, a constable of the special branch of the district police, was also stabbed. When the situation got out of control, the police started beating him severely.

When the situation was not under control, the police fired rubber bullets and shotguns to disperse both sides. Police arrested 9 people at that time. Due to the collision, all types of vehicles were stopped on the highway for about an hour. When the Mohan group left the Charmatha area after the clashes stopped, the people of the Aminul group regrouped and attacked and vandalized a petrol pump in the Charmatha area.

Police fired shots and drove them away again. After the clash, the situation is tense in Charmatha area. A large number of police have been deployed since the incident.

Bogra Sadar Circle Additional Police Faisal Mahmud said the situation was under police control. So far 9 people have been arrested from the area. He said the injured police constable and a journalist were rescued and admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
