Scurvy disease snatching lives in Bogura

More than 100 cows have died of scurvy disease (khura rog) in the last few days under Dhunat Upazila in Bogura. As a result, panic has spread in the area. Due to this unexpected reason, farmers and household families are living in extreme anxiety about their cows.

Among them, two experienced Dr. from Dhaka Came and collected samples. These samples will be tested in higher laboratories, said upazila live stock office.

Affected farmer Rafiqul Islam said that he has made a cow farm at home for about twenty years. No cow died in this farm. The farm had 15 cows of foreign breed. A week ago, the cows of the farm were suddenly attacked. In this situation, he hastily sold 7 cows. Out of the remaining 8 cows in the farm, 6 cows died in this month. Later, the affected cows died due to neck bending. It caused a loss of around 15 Tk lakh. The remaining two cows are under treatment.

After affection of cows, they contacted the upazila live stock office and did not receive medical care. Later, it was not possible to cure the cows by treating them with village doctors. Not only Rafiqul Islam, 1 cow of Liton Mahmud, 3 cows of Raju Ahmed and 1 cow of Shaheen Alam died in the span of a week. In this regard, Liton Mahmud said, like his cow, cows have also died in neighboring villages.

Village doctors are not able to diagnose the disease properly. Still we are working according to all the suggestions of rural doctors. The cows are not eating properly. They want to get out of this problem as soon as possible.

On inquiry, it is known that there are 11 people in the Upazila live stock Office. But only 4 people are working there. Among them, 1 officer and 4 sub-assistant officers are vacant for a long time.The only veterinary surgeon is staying in Dhaka for 6 months training from March 10. As a result, due to shortage of manpower in the office, the treatment program has stopped.

6 cows of another farmer named Rafiqul Islam of Goalbhag village in Mathurapur union in Dhunat upazila have died. Upazila Directorate of Animal Resources is not able to deal with cow disease due to lack of manpower and vaccines.

Upazila live stock Officer (Additional Charge) Dr. Hossain Md Rakibur Rahman said that the cows died of scurvy disease. The medical team of the department is advising the farmers in this regard. Farmers are being made aware through yard meetings. The crisis has been resolved due to availability of antidote. The antidote will be started soon.
