River side people becoming self-reliant rearing Buffalo in Kurigram

A total of 16 rivers including the Dharla, Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dudkumar, Gangadhar,Zinzeram and Sonavory are flowing in Kurigram district causing more than three hundred char and island char are situated here.

At present most of the rivers in the country including Kurigram have been lost their navigability and become dried up. Vast tract of the river beds have been developed with green grass.

Buffalo rearing is gaining popularity in the vast tract of charareas as well as river basin day by day. Buffalo rearing need low cost but it is more profitable. Most of the rover side people are plying a vital role to develop their respective family rearing buffalo. But most of the buffalo rearing are seen in the Brahmaputra River basins at Chilmari,Roumari and Rajibpurupazila in the district.

The green grasses including creepers have been grown in the char areas easily and the buffalos eat those grasses and River water like a cow causing many farmers and farm holders have been  started rearing with few cash and theyare changing their economic development as well as becoming self-reliant rearing buffalo.

While visiting on the spot and found that the herd of Buffalo locally known as “ MohishBatan” are grazing in the char areas under the open sky and sometimes they were seen to swim in the Brahmaputra River and those are also healthy.They are being grown up naturally and no need the feed then extra food causing the farmers have to count few cost.

The demand of milk of the buffalos are very high. Some farmers make curd,sweetmeats,ghee and others from the milk. Per kg milk and curd is being sold in the local market ranges Tk. 80-90 and those sale there like a hot cake and the farmers are fulfilling their necessary household demand.

Talking to Anowar Hossain 40,Jamal Uddin 56 and Kadam Ali of village Uttar Khawreat char under Chilmariupazila told that they have 5/7 buffalos each and they are getting about 6/7 kgs of milk from each buffalo every day. No buffalo is attacked by disease generally. Sometimes the grazing boy rides on back of the Buffalo and in this position he crosses the canal and Rivers which looks very nice.

Another farmer Golap Uddin 55 of Bandaber union under Roumariupazila told this correspondent that Buffalo has been rearing in the char areas for long and it is going on from my fore father.The meat of Buffalo is tasty and its demand is high.

The sweetmeats made from milk of both cow and buffalo at Dantbhangaunion under Roumariupazila is very tasty and famous in Rangpur division. People including high officials who come to Roumariupazila from many parts of the country in various purposes they don’t forget to purchase sweetmeats from here, local retired primary school teacher and also valiant Freedom Fighter AlhajEnsaf Ali 70 said.

Chairman of Bandaber union council also a valiant Freedom Fighter Abdul Kader said the history to rear of buffalo is long. Once upon a times there are several hundreds of buffalos of farmers in various char areas including at Kheruarchar, Bara char,Feiskar char and Namajer char here.Although it has decreased than previous times but its rotation is going on till now.

Kurigram District Livestock Officer (acting) Dr. Eunus Ali told this correspondent that buffalo rearing in char areas has no cost but profit is high. We are providing vaccine among the buffalo. The price of per buffalo at Tk 2-3 lacs according to size and shape, he added.
