Potol cultivation on the Dharla River bed in Kurigram

The bumper production of Potol have been achieved in the Dharla River bed in this year due to favorable climatic condition and although the farmers have been used pesticides to mitigate diseases but the farmers are being frustrated as the no officers of agriculture department visited in the field level yet.DAE officials said their man power are ready to give any suggestion.

More than one hundred farmers of south Naowabos village under Pachgachi union in Kurigramsadarupazila have been cultivated Potol on around 60 acres of land of the Dharla River bed and the production is also satisfactory. But the leaves of Potol and becoming red color and damaging due to sudden rainfall and drought like situation. Although the farmers are spraying pesticides but they are frustrated as the agriculture officials did not visit in the field level till now.

On the other hand the farmers have been cultivatedPotol taking loans with high interest are afraid of loss attacking by insects.Kurigram Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said that 390 hectares of land have been cultivated of Potol out of 4510 hectares of vegetables fields in the current kharip monsoon.The cultivators will be sold their Potol in the whole season after winter season.The demand of Potol is very high as the holy Ramadan is going on causes the demand of new Potol is like a hot cake. In wholesale market per kg is being sold at taka 40-45 but in retail price per kg is sold at taka 60 at present.

The cultivator Junayed and Liton informed that the Potol field become red color due to rain and drought like situation and leaves and other parts are being dried up but no one from agriculture office come here to visit.

Another cultivator Amzad Hossain told that the demand of this vegetable Potol is very high in the month of Ramadan. I sold several maunds of Potol yesterday and per maunds was sold at taka 2000 in whole sale market.

Talking to Al Amin son of MafijalHaque of village Uttar Naowabos told this correspondent that I cultivated potol on his one acre of land. It took taka one lac to preparethe bed last year but in this year expenditure is few and I used pesticide and I and expecting for better production in this year.

Deputy Director (DD) of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Biplab Kumar Mohonto told that the cultivation of Potol in char areas are increasing. DD himself, Upazila Agriculture officers and Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers will rush to the field level after getting information.
