Islamic University in Kushtia authorities, has expelled a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader and four activists from Deshratna Sheikh Hasina dormitory. The authorities took this decision after finding their involvement in the assault of a first-year student.
The expelled students include IU BCL unit vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora, as well as Tabassum and Maobiya from the Finance and Banking Department, Halima Khatun Urmi from the Fine Arts Department, and Ishrat Jahan Mim from the Law Department. The expelled students will not be allowed to stay in the dormitory for the rest of the academic year.
The hall provost, Professor M Shamsul Islam, stated that the decision was made after a probe body formed by the hall administration found evidence of the BCL members’ involvement in the incident. The incident came to light after the victim filed a complaint with the university authorities, following which an investigation was launched.
The incident occurred on February 12 when the fresher was tortured and humiliated by the BCL members.
Pro VC Prof. Dr. Mahbubur Rahman said, “We do not tolerate any form of violence or misconduct on our campus. The university has a zero-tolerance policy towards such incidents and will take appropriate action against those found guilty.”
