The learned judge of Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-1 A, K, M, Fazlul Haque sentenced the husband to death for killing his wife in Bogura and sentenced him to one more year of rigorous imprisonment without paying a fine of Tk 1 lakh.
On Sunday, the court acquitted the four accused as the charges were not proved.
Ujjal PK, who received the death sentence, is the son of late Abul Hossain of Kaichar Dakshin Para area of district headquarters. Ujjal has been absconding for a long time.
The acquitted are Ujjal’s brother Hira PK, Ujjal’s mother Aliya Bewa, Nazmul Hossain Labu, son of late Mujibur Rahman of Alokchatra area of Kahalur and his wife Lovely Begum.
According to case sources, Alo Begum (18), daughter of Akbar Ali Sheikh of Sutrapur area of the district, got married to Ujjal in June 2006. Tk 30,000 was paid as dowry to Ujjal during marriage.
After that, Ujjal demanded another Tk 50 thousand on the pretext of going abroad. A dispute arose between the two families over the demanded money. Later, the police recovered the body of Alor, who died of suffocation, from her husband Ujjal’s house.
Sister-in-law Alo, Jahangir Alam filed a case in connection with the recovery of the body. In this case, 6 people were accused with Ujjal as the main accused. After 16 years on Sunday afternoon, the court announced the verdict as the evidence of the case was found guilty.
Relatives of the late Alo Begum said that although Alo Begum’s parents have died, they have been handling the case in the hope of justice.
