Husband arrested for killing wife in Akkelpur

The body of housewife Meherun Nesha alias Bulbuli (19) was found within eight months of marriage in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat. Police have arrested the husband for killing his wife to demand dowry. The incident took place in Balukapara village of the upazila. The body of the housewife has been sent to Joypurhat District Modern Hospital Morgue for autopsy. Earlier on Sunday night, police recovered the body from her husband’s house in Raikali Balukapara village of the upazila.

According to local sources, Rakibul Islam of Raykali Balukapara village of Akkelpur upazila got married to Meherun Nesha just eight months ago. He is a chicken farmer. Rakibul borrowed money from different people of the village at high interest. This caused unrest in their family. Husband and wife got into a quarrel yesterday afternoon over borrowing at high interest. At one point, Rakibul beat his wife. Meherun Nesha’s body was found in a room of the house at night.

According to the relatives, Rakibul of Balukarpara village of the upazila had been torturing housewife Meherun for a long time demanding dowry. On Sunday night, the people of his father-in-law’s house called Meherun’s house and informed him that Meherun was ill. Later they saw that their daughter had been strangled to death. The victim’s mother filed a case with the police mentioning the names of five people. Police arrested her husband Rakibul on Monday.

Meherun Nesha’s mother Chamchun Nahar claimed that her in-laws, including her husband, had tortured and killed Meherun Nesha after torturing her. Suicide is being promoted to cover up the murder. However, people at Meherun’s father-in-law’s house say he has committed suicide.

Police have arrested Rakibul Islam, 22, the husband of a housewife who died in the case. Meherun Nesha is the daughter of Abdul Malek of Dhopaikuri village in Naogaon Sadar upazila.

Akkelpur police sub-inspector (SI) Ujjwal Hossain, who inquired into the body, said Meherun had scars on his neck. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue for autopsy.

Akkelpur Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif Khan said the housewife’s husband Rakibul was arrested in the incident.

According to Rakibul Islam, at one stage of the argument, he slapped his wife. His wife may have committed suicide.
