As the weather is favorable, both the agriculture department and farmers are expecting a bumper yield of boro paddy in 12 upazilas of Bogura district in this current season.
If there is no natural disaster in the district, the target of 7 lakh 89 thousand 4 hundred 32 metric tons of rice production has been set, said Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE). Bogura has a reputation as a surplus district for the production of various food products including paddy and rice throughout the country, DAE added.
The fields of the district are now spreading a wonderful beauty in the glow of green. Boro paddy (PI) pre-emergence period is going on all over the district. Farmers are busy clearing weeds with irrigation.
According to the District Agriculture Extension Department, the farmers have completed the planting of boro rice in this district till the middle of March during the iri-boro season this year. Now they are busy with irrigation and paddy field maintenance work. The Department of Agriculture has ensured the final system of irrigation in 100% of the land in the district under electric motor. The electricity department is providing uninterrupted power every day. As a result there is no shortage of water in the land.
Sultan Ali, a farmer of Erulia village of Sadar Upazila, said that they have benefited greatly in Iri Boro paddy cultivation due to water supply through electric irrigation equipment. There is a contract with the owner of the irrigator to irrigate the paddy land per bigha or acre. Land owners do not have to travel for irrigation. The owners of the irrigation machines themselves irrigate the paddy fields as per the requirement. He paid half of the contract and paid the rest after harvesting the paddy.
Jahangir Alam and Hisam Uddin, farmers of Dehar village of Kahalu upazila, said the same thing. With the help of the agriculture department, they are expecting a bumper crop this time. According to the directorate, till now no news of any problem in Iri Boro paddy cultivation has come to them from any place in the 12 upazilas of the district.
Deputy Director of DAE Md Matlubar Rahman said that 42,000 farmers in the district have been given hybrid seeds as incentives at the rate of 2 kg during the current Iri-Boro season. With the help of favorable weather and agriculture department, we are expecting an additional yield of the target this time.
