Flood situation remained unchanged in Kurigram

The overall flood situation remained unchanged in Kurigram district.

Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) sources said water levelof the Brahmaputra River was flowing above danger mark at Chilmariand atNoonkhawa above danger mark on Friday (July 05). Around 80 thousand people have been marooned.

Rivers have been swelling for the last four days causing the flood water entered in their rooms and the flood victims are in a fix with their children, cattle as well as belongings. The flood victims who have boats they took shelter on the boat and boat less victims raised their bed where they are passing days fighting with various insects. They are facing in a great trouble about cooking, scarcity of pure drinking water as well as sanitation. The flood affected persons are rushing to high lands, others houses and flood shelters.

HamidaKhatun of village Baladoba under Begumganj union of Ulipurupazila said I am in a great trouble with my children as flood water in my house and bed room. I cooked on my bed with risk. Another HamidulsaidI am in a fix with my cattle which are staying in water and I could not managed straw.

Hasna Begum 27 of village Kalir Alga under Jatrapur union in Sadarupazila said floow water in my entire room. Consequently, I took shelter on our small boat.But it could not be possible to cook rice there.

Chairman of Jatrapur union council Abdul Gafur said some 30000 persons in my union are marooned. Fishes of many ponds washed out.

The connecting road of Ferry ghat went under water causing ferry movement from Chilmari-Roumari remained has been suspended for the last three days. The goods carriages are being suffered badly. Manager of Chilmarighat of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA)ProfullaChouhan ensured the news.

In addition public representatives said Berubari, Bamondanga, Kaliganj, Narayanpur, Noonkhawa and Motherganj under Nageswariupazila, Ghogadaha, Panchgachi, Mogolbacha under Sadarupazila, Hatea, Shaheber Alga under Ulipurupazila, Ranihanj, Ramna, Austomirchar and Nayarhat under Chilmariupazila, Bandaber,CharSoulmari,Dantbhanga,Jadurchar under Roumariupazila and Kodalkati and Mohangany union under Char Rajibpurupazila are more flood affected and their condition are vulnerable.

Kurigram District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) Nabej Uddin Sarker said 37 govt. primary schools shut as flood water entered into those schools.

Deputy Director of Kurigram Department of Agriculture extension Abdullah Al Mamun said 2300 hectares of crop lands are inundated in the current flooding. Specially jute, RopaAman seedlings,vegetables, teel,Kaunetc. have gone under water.

The farmers said we are frustrated if the inundated crops remain under water for more several days, those may be damaged.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Monjur-E Morshed said a control room has been opened in the health department to face flood situation. In addition union based 84m medical teams are providing health care services. Some 20 thousand water purifying tablets and 20 thousand Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) are kept for distribution among flood victims.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad SaidulArif said all preparation have been taken to face the flood situation. All are working in field level. Relief distribution activities is going on.

Kurigram District Relief and rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Abdul Hye said 173 MT rice and taka 10 lakh have been distributed among flood victims in all the nine upazilas in the district. Some 600 MT rice and Taka 30 lakh are deposited which will be distributed periodically.

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Zakir Hossain withKurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad SaidulArif, Superintendent of police Al Asad Mohammad Islam and other government officers has visited several flood affected areas atUlipurupazla and distributed relief materials among flood victims on Friday (July 05).
