The Gulshan police have arrested Mim Khatun, also known as Afsana Mim, 26, vice-president of Pabna municipal Juba Mahila League and her husband Obaidullah, 36, on charge of embezzling money through fraud.
They were arrested at their house in the Masum Bazar area in the Pabna district town on Wednesday morning with the help of the Pabna Sadar thana police.
The arrestees, Mim Khatun and her husband Obaidullah, are residents of the Pabna municipality area.
Confirming the matter, inspector for investigation of the Gulshan police station, Sheikh Shahanur Rahman, said, ‘They were arrested in Pabna on Wednesday morning in a fraud case.’
On February 19, one Moniruzzaman filed a fraud case with the Dhaka’s Gulshan police against them.
The plaintiff in the case, Moniruzzaman, 32, son of Abdus Sattar of ChandbhaHatpara village of Atgharia upazila in Pabna is a contractor and businessman by profession.
He lives at Shajahanpur in the Dhaka city. He has a business named ABS at Gulshan-2.
In the case statement, Moniruzzaman said, ‘He encountered Mim through Facebook. A few days later Mim introduced a man named Obaidullah to him as her brother-in-law. Later, Mim and Obaidullah borrowed Tk 13,17, 590 from him at different times for business at Rabiul market in the Pabna town promising to include him as business partner past year.’
On February 16, they threatened to kill Moniruzzaman saying that they would not return the money, said Moniruzzaman in the statement.
Gulshan police officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam told the media that they arrested them in a fraud case, adding that it was a matter for them to see to which party they belonged.
Lawyer Arefa Khanam Shefali, president of Pabna district Juba Mahila League, said, ‘Afsana Mim is the vice-president of Pabna municipal Juba Mahila league. We have come to know about her fraud and arrest. And that is why the municipal Juba Mahila league has expelled her from the organisation for breaking the party discipline.’
Meanwhile, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday placed Mim Khatun and her husband Obaidullah on one-day remand on charges of misappropriation of money through fraud as they were produced before the court in the fraud case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque denied bail and placed them on one-day police remand.
