Teesta River eroding, farmers frustrated in Kurigram

Water level of all the Rivers are decreasing gradually but the plight of flood victims have not been mitigated.T-Aman Paddy farming in low lying areas and River side areas are also inundated till now and the farmers of Kurigram district are frustrated.

Kurigram Water Development Board sources said the Brahmaputra River is steady and flowing only 2cm below danger level at Chilmari point and also steady and below 18cm danger level at Noonkhawa point Dharla River is decreasing but is flowing 66cm below at the Dharla Bridge point,Dudkumar River is decreasing but 128cm below at Pateswari point and the Teesta is increasing but flowing 22cm below from danger levelat Kaunia point at 12pm on Saturday.

While visiting on the spot at Gharealdanga union under Rajarhatupazila in Kurigram and found that the mighty Teesta River is eroding T-Aman paddy fields at Khetabkha village under Ghareldanga union of the upazila. The laborers are seen busy to dump geo bags in erosion prone areas and are trying to protect the rest part of RCC spar. The other 30 meter spar washed away by heavy current of the Teesta River recently.

Local Aiyub Ali 31 a school teacher, Abdul Khaleque 52 a DakhilMadrasha teacher and Abul 34 a farmer told that the houses of more than 600 families eroded by the gulping River Teesta forced them to be homeless and landless within the last one month here. Another houses of River side may be eroded at any time.Khetabkha government Primary School, one clinic, two mosques and other infrastructures are being threatened. They also told that the river hit victims buy few lands in high areas but those prices have also been increased.

AbdusSattar 75 and widow OhijonBewa 70 told this correspondent that earlier our houses eroded several times. If our houses erode where we will go, they lamented.

The house wife Bulbuly 25 and Roshna 25 narrated same words.

Harun 40 a shop keeper told that I am only the earning member of my family with the shop. If the mighty River Teesta engulf my shop, where shall I go with my family?

Deputy Director of Kurigram Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Boplab Kumar Mohonta said T-Aman field on 5328 hectares of land, seedlings on 67 hectares and various vegetables on 288 hectares of land have gone under flood water. Actual loss will be estimated after receding of flood water.
