All the major Rivers are swelling continuously due to on rush of water from upstream and rainfall. T-Aman Paddy farming in low lying areas, River sides and fresh areas are also inundated. The farmers of Kurigram district are frustrated.
Kurigram Water Development Board sources said the Brahmaputra River is flowing only 2cm below danger level at Chilmari point, 16cm below at Noonkhawa point,Dharla River is decreasing slightly but is flowing 48cm below at the Dharla Bridge point, Dudkumar River 87cm below at Pateswari point and the Teesta is flowing 13cm below from danger levelat Kaunia point at 9am on Friday.
Scarcity of pure drinking water is prevailing in char areas as tube wells of low lying areas are inundated. Most of the rural roads have gone under water causing the communication system have been collapsed there.
The people have to go from one place to another by boat and banana tree made raft. The vast tracts of grass land are inundated. Consequently, acute shortage of fodder crisis are also prevailing. Several hundreds of hectares of T-Aman paddy farming, vegetable fields and other crops are being submerged.
Azgar Ali 55 a farmer of village Setaijhar under Pachgachi union in Sadarupazila said the flood water damaged my planted T-Aman fields two times. I shall not plant T-Aman in my land again in this year as I have no ability.
Monju Miah 44 of village Garuhara in the same area said all the rural roads are inundated here due to increasing if flood water. We can’t move from one place to another without boat.
Afroza Begum 24 a house wife Porar char under Jatrapur union in sadarupazila said our tube well and latrine went under flood water five days back. We are being suffered in manifold problems including cooking, sanitation, communication and son’s education.
Chairman of Begumganj union under UlipurupazilaBabluMiah said around 700 families in several char areas in my unions are marooned. I have received 400 tons of rice which will be distributed among the flood victims gradually.
Chairman of Jatrapur UP under sadarupazilaAlhaj Abdul Gafur said around 300 families of the Brahmaputra River basin are marooned. Sanitation problem are acute here.
Deputy Director of Kurigram Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Boplab Kumar Mohonta said T-Aman field on 5328 hectares of land, seedlings on 67 hectares and various vegetables on 288 hectares of land have gone under flood water. Actual loss will be estimated after receding of flood water.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad SaidulArif said 362 MT rice, 5 lakh taka in cash and 3700 packets of dry food have been allocated in upazila basis as per demand which are being distributed and taka 2 lakh for child food and 5 lakh taka for purchasing of food for cattle are deposited.
