Islamic University (IU) still has 50 vacant seats for the Bachelor’s first year after admission from mass notification for the academic year 2021-22. The number of empty seats may increase if the cancellation of admission continues. The university authorities have stated that the admission process can be completed by keeping these seats vacant.

IU academic section deputy-registrar, Md. Shahidul Islam, confirmed this information, adding that initially, 34 seats were vacant, but the number has increased due to the cancellation of admission by some students. Folklore and ‘Islamic History and Culture’ dept. have the highest number of vacant seats.

University authority had earlier asked candidates who were not allotted departments from different units to apply. However, even at the end of the mass notification, many seats remain vacant.

This year, a total of 42,429 students applied to three units, out of which 24,343 students applied in the ‘A’ unit, 12,870 in the ‘B’ unit, and 5,216 students in the ‘C’ unit.

IU teacher association, GS, Prof. D. Tapan Kumar, said leaving seats vacant was not expected. We asked the university administration to convene the academic council by March 21 to start the admission process for the academic year 2022-23.

University Pro-VC Prof. D. Mahbubur Rahman said the admission program is closed, and new admissions will not be taken. However, discussions are ongoing regarding how to address this issue. A decision regarding this matter will be made during the Academic Council meeting.
