Flood hit people frustrated in Kurigram

The mighty Teesta River is eroding at Bazra union of Ulipur upazila in Kurigram for the last few days engulfing about two hundred fifty houses and other establishments.

The Teesta River side people are rendered homeless day by day. More than two hundred fifty people of three villages rendered homeless within the last seven days.

Meanwhile, cultivable lands of 500 bighas, community clinic, two mosques, a temple, Eidgah ground, Bazra Pachchim para Dakhil Madrasha, Old Bazra Bazar and a non govt. primary school have gone in the River bed. The River erosion hit victims have taken shelter here and there and they are passing their days under the open sky in sub human condition. Upazila administration and Public representatives are not helping them, local people regretted.

The erosion have been started at Pachchim Kalpani Bazra,Kalpani Bazra and Satalaskor villages under Bazra union one month back. In addition, devouring situation is also prevailing in one kilometer area from local Judge Miah’s house to Rostom Moulovi’s house.

Superintendent of Bazra Pachchim para Dakhil Madrasha Moulovi Rafakat Hossain said we have been conducting the Madrasha for the last twenty years. The river engulfed major portion of the Madrasha in this year and the rest portion is being removed to safer place.

Mozammel Haque 65 of village Kalpani Bazra said we are poor and we have no place causing we are staying in the field under the open sky and burst into tears.

Ulipur UNO Bipul Kumar said the concerned UP chairman and UP members are ordered to prepare a list of victims within a short time. Assistance will be given after getting the list.

Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) Abdullah Al Mamun said suddenly erosion have started here. We have informed the matter to higher authority concerned. Necessary measure will be taken immediately.

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Sabirul Islam has visited the erosion hit areas recently. At the end of visit he has distributed Corrugated Iron (CI) sheets, cash money and dry food among 125 families. Kurigram Deputy Commissioner(DC) Mohammad Reszaul Karim, Superintendent of Police(SP) Al Asad Mohammad Mahfujul Islam, Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) Abdullah Al Mamun, Ulipur Upazila chairman Freedom Fighter(FF) Golam Hossain Montu, Additional Superintendent of Police(Ulipur Circle) Mohammad Mohibul Islam, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer(DRRO) Abdul Hye Sarkar, Assistant Commissioner(Land) Kazi Mahmudur Rahman, Upazila vice chairman Abu Sayed Sarkar, Chairman of Bazra UP Abdul Kaiyum Sardar, Project Implementation Officer(PIO) Sirajuddoula, Organizing secretary of Ulipur upazila unit of Awami League Ranjan Mojumdar Vola and Local UP member Enamul Haque were present among others.
