Police on Sunday arrested Nagdemra union parishad chairman Hafizur Rahman in a case filed over hacking to death of an Awami League activist in Santhia upazila of Pabna.
The victim is Abdul Motin, 40, a relative of former Nagdemra UP chairman Harunur Rashid, also the union AL secretary.
Harun’s younger brother Jewel Rana was injured in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital, the former chairman told the journalists on Sunday.
Harun filed a case accusing Hafizur and 18 others with Santhia police station on Sunday.
Komol Kumar Debnath, inspector (investigation) of Santhia police station, said police arrested Hafizur and one Abu Sayeed after the case was lodged.
Harun said the duo were attacked by criminals backed by Hafizur while on their way home from Santhia Bazar on Saturday night. Motin died on the spot, he said.
Harun said rebel candidate Hafizur defeated him in the last UP polls. Supporters of Hafizur have since been harassing AL men in the area, Harun alleged.
“Primarily we have come to know that the enmity between the current chairman and former chairman might be behind the killing. We are investigating the incident,” said Inspector Komol.
