World Environment Day-2021 was observed in the district with much enthusiasm as elsewhere in the country and the globe today with a call to protect the environment to save human civilization.
This year’s theme of the day is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore’ and its focal point is ecosystem restoration.’
Marking the day, Jana Udyog, a local social organization for all citizens, chalked out the programmes.
This noon, a big human chain organized by the foundation was also held in front of Ashaduzzman market of the district town.
Presided over by convener of Jana Udyog professor Jahurul Kaiyum, the human chain was also addressed among others by general secretary of Gaibandha Bar Association Adv. Sirajul Islam, president of district Gano Forum Moynul Haque Raza, member secretary of Jana Udyog Probir Chakrabartee, human rights worker Anjali Rani Devi, former councilor of Gaibandha Municipality Sajeda Parvin, president of district Chhattra Union Warez Sarkar and Dalit leader Khilon Robidash.
The speakers in their speeches said, Bangladesh experiences natural disasters every year due to its geographical location and it is facing the adverse impacts of climate change too.
the existence of the human civilization is now at stake due to extensive environmental degradation, forest destruction, unchecked pollution and climate change impacts, they added.
They also emphasized for taking steps to save environment to make development of the country more sustainable.
They also demanded of the government to stop the development activities which are harmful to the environment and take necessary steps to protect the bio-diversity of the environment.
Besides this, Gana Unnayan Kendra(GUK), a local reputed non-government organization also chalked out the programme marking the day.
All staff of the organization expressed their determination to plant saplings of various trees on the road sides, open spaces and surroundings of the houses to protect the environment from the adverse impact, said Md. Aftab Hossain, coordinator of GUK.
