US President Joe Biden has threatened to re-impose sanctions on Myanmar’s military after it took power.
The military has detained Aung San Suu Kyi’s party and other leaders in connection with a landslide victory in the November election.
In a statement, Mr. “The forces should not try to invalidate public opinion or the results of an acceptable election,” Biden said.
The United Nations and the United States have condemned the military coup in the country. The United States lifted the blockade on Myanmar almost a decade after democracy began.
Mr. Biden says it will be urgently reviewed. “Wherever democracy is under attack, the United States will stand up for democracy,” he said. The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the issue.
