Two arrested for beating madrassa committee president to death in Pabna

The police on Thursday night arrested two people for allegedly beating the president of a local madrassah management committee to death at Chatmohar in Pabna.

He was allegedly killed as a row broke out over the formation of a local madrassah committee.

The murder took place at Boro Guakhra village under Parswdanga union of the upazila at about 8:30pm on Thursday.

The deceased, Abdul Alim Sarkar, 52, was the president of Ma Maleka Ishaq Darul Akram Ibtedayi Madrassah and a resident of Boro Guakhra village.

The arrested are Afsar Ali, 65, and his son Kamrul Hasan, 40, of the same village and also assistant teachers of Tengarjani Government Primary School of the upazila.

According to witnesses, a meeting was organised in the village on Thursday evening to organise an Islamic Jalsa for the overall development of Ma Maleka Ishaq Darul Akram Ibtedayi Madrassah.

After the meeting, as the victim, Abdul Alim Sarkar, reached in front of Mazar Sharif gate of Bara Guakhra village on his way back home, the accused Afsar Ali and his son Kamrul Hasan locked in an altercation with Alim Sarkar.

At one point, the arrestees and their accomplices beat him with sticks and other locally made weapons, leaving him seriously injured.

Later, he was rescued and rushed to Chatmohar Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Golzar Hossain, brother of the deceased, filed a murder case with the police station on Thursday night accusing 7 people, including Afsar Ali and his son Kamrul Hasan, in this regard.

According to local people, there had been a dispute between Afsar Ali and deceased Abdul Alim Sarkar over the formation of the Ma Maleka Ishaq Darul Akram Ibtedayi Madrassah management committee.

Chatmohar police station officer-in-charge Salim Reza confirmed the incident.

He said that the arrestees were sent to jail through a court order on Friday.
