River erosion rendered homeless

The Teesta River becomes furious due to rainfall and onrush of water from upstream. Hundreds of bighas of cultivable lands, trees and houses were eroded by the gulping River Teesta within the last seven days. A good number of people rendered landless and homeless here. About 40 meter of main road damaged.

Water level of several Rivers including the Teesta,Brahmaputra and Dharla increased due to onrush of water from upstream causes River erosion has taken a serious turn. Bazra area under Ulipur upazila and adjoining Kashim Bazar area under Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district are eroding due to heavy current of the Teesta River.

More than fifty houses, a good number of cultivable land, orchard and other establishments are being eroded within the last week.The traditional Kashimbazar Haat,Government Primary School,Girls High School, and Alea Madrasha which was built during the reign of British are threatened.Public representatives and Water Development Board officials are not taking any measure. Consequently, the River erosion victims are being frustrated.

Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board Arifur Rahman admitted the incident of River erosion and told that we are trying to protect the erosion throughing G.O bags and G.O. Tubes. Ten people are working there daily.
