Farmers expecting bumper production of onion in Kurigram

The farmers of Kurigram district are expecting for bumper production of onion in this season. Meanwhile they have been started of harvesting in some places and selling in the local markets receiving better profit.

The harvesting of onion will be started in full swing within a short time. The farmers are expecting for bumper production as the growing plants of onion amid suitable climatic condition.

While visiting on the spot this correspondent found that several onion farming is going to be harvest soon. Talking to the farmer Shahidul Islam 42 of village Nefardarga under Kathalbari union in Kurigramsadarupazila told that he has cultivated on his 20 decimal of land and he is expecting for better yield and satisfactory prices as the holy Ramadan is knocking at our doors. In the month of Ramadan onion is a very necessary item and its demand is high.

Another farmer Babul Miah 56 of Kaliganj under Nageswariupazila told that he has cultivated on his one bigha of land and the harvesting has also been started and he is expecting for good yield than the last year. The per kg onion is being sold at Taka 100 per kg in the market at present. Consequently, the price of per mound onion at Taka 4000.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said a total of 2350 hectares of land have brought under onion cultivation in this year in the district. Of them, some 165 hectares of land in KurigramSadar upazila,565 hectares in Ulipur upazila,455 hectares in Chilmari upazila,185 hectares in Roumari upazila,290 hectares in Rajibpur upazila,270 hectares in Bhurungamari upazila,240 hectares in Nageswari upazila,55 hectares in Phulbariupazila and 125 hectares of land in Rajarhatupazila.The production on an average at 11.05MT.
