A farmer named Mrityunjay Sarkar (46) has committed suicide in Rangpur’s Mithapukur as he could not bear the burden of debt. He committed suicide by hanging himself in his house on Monday (January 3) at the dead of night.
His wife has filed an unnatural death case at the police station. He died in Tulsipur village of Durgapur union of the upazila. He was the son of Binod Chandra Sarkar.
.According to police and local sources, Mritunjay Sarkar made a living by farming on his land. He has a wife and two children. He started selling land a few years ago for family reasons. Then the shortage comes down. He continued to run his family with loans from NGOs and local associations. One after another, more than taka 20 lakh were borrowed from various NGOs and associations. Has been coming with loan interest money for 3 years. But he can’t repay the loan.
Meanwhile, Mritunjay has sold his land and is on his way with his wife and children. On the other hand, the people of the association were pressuring for interest money. As a result, he lost his way. So, on Monday night, the farmer committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom.
Local UP member Swapan Chandra said Mrityunjay was in debt. He sold his land and became destitute. Debt-ridden, he committed suicide.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mithapukur Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said Mrityunjay was struggling to meet the needs of his family members due to poverty. On the other hand, the pressure of debt money he committed suicide sometime on Monday night. The victim’s wife Bhanurani has filed an unnatural death case. However, at the request of the family, the body was allowed to be buried
