Doing sustainable development works in chars to achieve SDG underscored

Speakers in a day long workshop here yesterday underscored the need for performing the sustainable development works in the chars of the district from nowto help achieve sustainable development goals(SDGs) of the government by 2030 declared by the United Nations Development programme(UNDP).

“The past working experience and learning from the past works could help the officials and the employees implement new projects in new areas properly facing the challenges they faced earlier and addressed successfully’. they also said.

They came up wiyhthe comments while addressing a day long workshop-2021 on Results Sharing and Way Forward at the hall room of the Circuit House of the town here on Wednesday.

BDRCS, Gaibandha district unit organized the workshop under Disaster Risk Management (DRM)project funded by Swiss Red Cross (SRC).

Secretary of BDRCS, District unit, Reza in his welcome speech said disaster risk reduction (DRR) Wash project launched September, 2013 was implemented at Kamarjani and Mollarchar unions under Sadarupazila at the cordial efforts of BDRCS, district unit till June,2017. Then another project namely DRM was introduced from July,2017 and it was implemented at Fazlupur, Erendabari, Fulchhari and Gozaria unions under FulchhariUpazila of the district and the duration of the project would end June, 2021.

Many development works including, homestead raising, tube well sinking, tube well platforms construction, filling up school ground with earth, installation of hygiene latrins, making katcha roads, distributing asset and cash support to the flood affected people were done under the project, he also said.

In January last, 2021 a baseline survey was conducted at the project command areas of the district by a team of consultation about the development works done by the project. The team included two men one is Bangladeshi and another is foreigner, he added.

After conducting base line survey, they compiled a study report about the development works done by the project officials and staffs in the project areas in cooperation with the local government bodies, he further added.

As the BDRCS is actively considering to bring Kapasia and Horipur unions of Sundarganjupazila of the district under the DRM project, the team also conducted feasibility study at Kapasia and Horipur Unions under Sundorgonjupazila in the month of January and prepared a study report, he mentioned.

In the report, the team indicated the utility and inconvenient of the work and challenges elaborately and how to do the project work in the unionssuccessfully, he termed.

To review the project activities, demand assessment and exchanging the learnings acquired from the project, this workshop has been arranged here today, he briefed all.

Deputy commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and deputy head of delegation, SRC, Sanjib Biswas Sanjay and director, disaster response and focal person of BDRCS, SRC partnership, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Mohammad Mizanur Rahman also spoke at the function as the special guests while member of executive committee of BDRCS, district unit, RezunnabiRazu presided over the ceremony.

Moderated by secretary of BDRCS district unit,Rezaul Karim Reza, the meeting was also addressed among others by Sundorgonj UNO Md Al- Maruf, Fulchhari UNO Abu RaihanDolon, Kapasia Union parishod (UP) chairman Jalal Uddin Sarker, Horipur UP chairman MdNaphiul Islam SarkerZimi, Erendabari UP chairman MdAzizur Rahman, Fulchhari UP chairman Abdul GofurSarker and Gozaria UP chairman MdSamsulAlam and senior journalist Sarker Mohammad Shahiduzzaman.

Earlier, two power point presentations on the activities of the project and survey reports were done by Saiful Islam, project officer of DRR and Mohammad Jasim Uddin Kabir, senior manager resilience in the function.

Many recommendations raised bythr participants were also adopted to run the project in the chars here during the open discussion session of the workshop.

DC Abdul Matin in his speeches urged all the concerned to do development works carefully so that the works were sustainable and durable and the char dwellers could be benefitted from the works to change their lots.

The DC also gave his commitment to provide all sorts of administrative help and assistance to run the DRM project in the district in the days ahead peacefully

A number of people including govt. officials, public representatives, NGO activists, volunteers, town elite, including journalists took part in the workshop.
