Cultivation of foreign fruits is gradually increasing inKurigram district. Although the quantity is less, this time the name of grapes has been written in that list. The color and taste of these grapes are similar to the grapes imported from abroad, so success has also been met here.
If the cultivation of this profitable fruit is widely spread, besides reducing import dependency, the farmers of this area can benefit from poverty. In addition to employment, the demand for fruits will also be met. Foreign exchange spent on imports will be saved. The farmers of the outer districts are also encouraged to see the yield of this delicious fruit.
Additional Deputy Director of Kurigram Agriculture Extension Department Asaduzzaman said that the agriculture department is keeping an eye on the soil and climate of Kurigram to understand how the yield of grapes is. If good results are obtained, necessary measures will be taken for expansion in the district.
Abu Raihan Farooq, the entrepreneur of Belgacha union of KurigramSadarupazila has make a beautiful orchard (fruit garden) on his 23-bigha of land near his house. The garden has various fruit trees including hundreds of varieties of grapes, oranges, apples, mangoes and various types of local and foreign fruit trees. As soon as any one enter the garden, he can sees red rose, Halloween, Baikanur, Green Long, Iceberg, Supernova and other varieties of colorful grapes hanging on vines. He experimentally started grape cultivation in 2022 on one bigha of land. As the yield was good later, this year he cultivated grapes on two bighas of land. He has already started harvesting more than 40 varieties of grapes. As the yield is quite good, grapes are being sold at 400 to 500 taka per kg in the current season and he sold grape seedlings for about taka one lakh. Many farmers and visitors come from the district and outside the district to see Farooq’s garden every day.
On the other hand, Ruhul Amin, a farmer of Gangarhat village in Fulbari upazila of the district, also cultivated grapes of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey variety on his two bighaof land. About 40 varieties of grapes adorn in his garden.
Entrepreneur Abu Raihan Farooq said that he did not decide to create a mixed garden from the mentality of doing something by himself without chasing after a job.
He said in my garden there are different types of fruits of local and foreign varieties. About two years ago, I started cultivating grapes on one bigha of land. I have cultivated grapes on two acres of land due to the good yield,the yield is also very good and tasty. This time there is a target level of selling grape seedlings and fruits worth taka 5 to 6 lakhs. (PTO)
Ruhul Amin, a grape grower of Gangarhat area of Fulbari upazila said, I grow grapes on one bigha of land. The yield is good in this year, I have cultivated grapes on double acre land. In the future, I have a plan to cultivate grapes on four bigha of land.
