Chilmari-Roumari ferry service to start on June

Roumari and Rajibpur upazila disconnected by the Brahmaputra River in Kurigram district will come under communication system within a short time. Some 21 kilometer river route will come under ferry service in the month of upcoming July and will mitigate the sufferings among the people of the two upazilas.

A high official team of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has been visited the route for possibility of ferry movement on February 02.They visited ghat areas of both sides of Chilmari and Roumari ghat, connecting road and navigability. The visiting team comprising by General Manager of  BIWTA(marine) Hasemur Rahman, Director(commerce) S.M. Ashikuzzaman, Executive Engineer Rubeluzzaman Biddut and Additional Director of BIWTA Mohammad Arif.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Ministry Mohammad Zakir Hossain received the members of visiting team on Roumari side. Upazila Nirbahi officer of Roumari and Rajibpur upazila, concerned upazila engineers and others officers were also present.

Concerned sources said chief secretary of the Prime Minister Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain visited in Kurigram and went to Roumari upazila recently. At that time local people demanded to start ferry movement on Roumari-Rajibpur river route. The chief secretary immediately ordered to shipping secretary and Water resources secretary who were with him. Consequently, the decision was taken to start ferry movement on the river route immediately.

Locals alleged that several lacks of inhabitants of both Roumari and Rajibpur upazilas used to come to district town for administrative, personal and judicial activities crossing the Brahmaputra River by boat taking risk of lives, violating disrupted weather in the rainy season, shortage of navigability in the summer, passing time and counting more money due to lack of ferry service from Independence of the country. Most of them have to stay at night in Kurigram town as they fail to reach at the ghat as well as boat in time after finishing their activities. Smooth communication will be created with Kurigram to go to Dhaka after starting ferry service and communication cost will be decreased.

General Manager of BIWTA (marine) Hasemur Rahman told that we come here to visit all technical sides as per order of the chief secretary of the Prime Minister. All works including dredging to hold navigability will be finalized. Development of ghat in both sides will also develop.

Executive Engineer Rubeluzzaman Biddut told that at present Roumari and Rajibpur River route is 21 kilometer but we are trying to decrease distance wich will at 13-14 kilometer by dredging. Consequently, both time and money of the passengers will save.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif told that the decision has been taken by the order of the chief secretary sir to start ferry movement on Chilmari-Roumari river route of the Brahmaputra River. Ferry service will start soon after primary preparation.
