Boat symbol candidate Anjuman Ara Begum Bonya becomes mayor of Thakurgaon municipality

Anjuman Ara Begum Bonya, a candidate for the boat symbol in Thakurgaon municipality, has won by a huge margin after the fourth round of voting. She is the first woman mayor of Thakurgaon municipality. And in this election BNP has collapsed.

Thakurgaon District Election Officer and Returning Officer Jilhaj Uddin announced the results privately on Sunday evening. Awami League nominated boat symbol candidate Anjman Ara Begum Bonya got 28,502 votes for the post of mayor of Thakurgaon municipality, while her nearest rival BNP candidate for paddy sheaf symbol Shariful Islam Sharif got 5,333 votes. Besides, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Anwar Hossain got 1,063 votes.

District Returning Officer Zilhaj Uddin said, “Voting started from 8 am in 21 centers in 12 wards of Thakurgaon Municipality through EVM machines.” Voting went on non-stop till 4 pm. Various law enforcement agencies, including the BGB, police and mobile courts, were deployed to conduct the polls in a peaceful atmosphere and the polling ended well.

The total number of voters in Thakurgaon municipality is 60,626. The number of male voters is 29,612 and the number of female voters is 31,015.

Meanwhile, at a press conference at the district BNP office around 12 noon, the BNP rejected the results, alleging irregularities in the vote. Meanwhile, Shariful Islam Sharif, district BNP president Taimur Rahman, general secretary Faisal Amin and others.
