A human chain and discussion meeting was organised in Pabna on the occasion of the World AIDS Day on Tuesday. The Lighthouse Consortium arranged a humanchain in the middle town on the day of AIDS in the morning.
A discussion meeting was held at the Media Ccenter titled ‘Unity around the world, everyone has a responsibility to prevent AIDS’ at the end of the humanchain.
Dr. Hasina Wahab, Medical Officer (MO Clinic) of Pabna Delivery Hospital and Distinguished Gynecologist was present as the Chief Guest and Pabna Municipality Women Councilor Mst. Afroza Khatun Chhabi, Suchita executive director Nasrin Parveen, Pratik Women and Children’s executive director SM Saifur Rahman were the special guests at the discussion gathered.
Chief guest Dr. Hasina Wahab said that AIDS is a disease like eight/ ten chronic diseases. This disease will not be completely cured. Infection with the HIV virus reduces a person’s normal immune system. However, if it is infected today, it will not reduce the immunity tomorrow. Any infection can lead to death if one’s immune system is weakened. What we do is try to increase immunity with drugs.
According to the doctors, the rate of HIV transmission is higher among women, men and homosexuals during sexual activity, she added. She gives a detailed idea about HIV / AIDS and advises everyone to have a safe and careful sex life. In this situation, like other countries, World AIDS is being observed in Bangladesh today.
Other speakers called for the elimination of prejudices, misconceptions and inequalities among the general population regarding the AIDS-infected population.
Earlier, Lighthouse manager Zakir Haider gave a welcome speech conducted by development organiser journalist Kamal Ahmed Siddiquee.
Among others, Mitul, President of Third Gender Development Organisation’s Pabna district president Mitul and its general secretary Shahidul also spoke in the discussion meeting.
A number of men and women of the custom (hijra) community of the town also took part in the programme.
