More than 50 houses of supporters of the defeated chairman candidate were attacked and vandalised in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna. At least 10 people including a freedom fighter and a woman were injured. The injured have been admitted to Pabna General Hospital.
According to the source of the complaint, after the counting of votes on Wednesday night and on Thursday evening, supporters of the winning candidate attacked Kshetupara under Manikhat Union, Sagarkandi under Sagarkandi Union, Gobindpur, Sripur, Durgapur, Bhatpara under Satbaria Union, Ahmedpur- Sonatala of Ahmedpur Union, Badai and more than half a hundred houses in various areas. At least 10 people including women and freedom fighters were seriously injured in the attack.
Pabna Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sujanagar Circle) Rabiul Islam confirmed the attack and said that the police have been deployed in the area of the attack and the current situation is calm.
According to complaint sources, after the counting of votes on Wednesday, Upazila Awami League president (motorcycle symbol) Abdul Wahab was the winner and (pineapple symbol) Upazila Awami League general secretary and current chairman Shahinuzzaman Shahin was defeated.
During the counting of votes on Wednesday, supporters of the motorcycle symbol took out a victory procession in different areas of the upazila.
Meanwhile, they started attacking the mentioned areas. The attackers attacked the house of a freedom fighter Abdul Matin in Dakshinchar area under Ahmedpur Union and beat him up seriously. Later he was rescued and admitted to Pabna General Hospital.
The defeated candidate Upazila Awami League general secretary and current chairman Shahinuzzaman Shahin said, “Hundreds of my supporters’ houses were attacked and hellish violence was carried out. The terrorists attacked and vandalised the houses and temples of the minorities.
I strongly condemn these heinous acts of violence in the homes of my supporters and the culprits must be brought to justice at the earliest.’
Abdul Wahab, the winning candidate and president of Upazila Awami League, (pineapple symbol) refused to comment on the matter.
Pabna Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sujanagar Circle) Rabiul Islam said, “Immediately after the incident, we have deployed additional police in different areas and the situation is now under control. I visited a few vandalised houses and asked them to file a written complaint with the police station. Complaints will be filed and legal action will be taken against the culprits.
