Beekeepers happy over fair market price of honey in Bogura

The beekeepers are getting benefited producing honey from mustard fields across Bogura district during current rabi season. The commercial bee farming has become blessings for many grassroots farmers as it has changed their fortunes, helping them to earn extra money to lead a happy and prosperous life.

While visiting at Shekhahar village under Kahaloo upazila the correspondent found that the farmers are passing busy times with honey harvesting during the flowering stage of the mustard plants.

Source of Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said over 40,825 hectares of land have been cultivated for mustard farming in all twelve upazilas of the district this current season.

Beekeper Zahangir, comes from nearby Pabna district said the honey collectors got huge honey as the farmers of the district cultivated mustard on extensive land this year. As a result, the target of honey production has already been exceeded though the collection of honey has not been completed yet. Nearly 10 thousand bee boxes have been set up by 60 beekeepers in the district.

“I have started honey producing at my farm with 20 boxes spending tk 20 thousand,” said Abul Hossain. “I want to make over  Tk 0.2 million if the market price remain good.” He added.

President of Chamber of Commerce Md Masudur Rahman Milon said the farmers in this region have become financially solvent and changed their fortunes by earning more money from honey farming.
