Speakers in a function here unequivocally said flood forecasting can help the people of flood prone areas save the losses of lives and properties and the environment as well.
“Due to geographical location, flood visits 165 chars located in four upazilas of the district every year creating untold and painful sufferings to the flood victims. In this perspective, modern flood forecasting system can help the people make aware about the possible disaster in a bid to mitigate their sufferings through adopting early action of plan or preparedness”, they also said.
They came up with the comments while they were addressing a roundtable meeting on Flood Inundation Modelling to improve Flood Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh.
FRIENDSHIP, an international social purpose organization which has been working in the district for long aimed at changing the socio-economic condition of char dwellers here and LUXEMBOURG Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) jointly arranged the function at FRIENDSHIP Center at Madnerpara under Fulchhariupazila in the district on Wednesday under Climate Adaptation Project in the support of List, LUXEMBOURG Aid Development, LUX DEV.
Deputy Director (DD) of Local Government division attended the function as the chief guest and DD of department of Agricultural Extension (DAE)KhorshedAlamSarker and Md. Walid Arshad, sub divisional engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) addressed the function as the resource persons.
The function began through the welcome address delivered by senior director of FRIENDSHIP Md. KaziAmdadulHaque.
Then, the power point presentation on better understanding of weather forecasting system, better understanding of flood management practices and better understanding of Agro-Meteorological Information System were done by Md. Mostafizar Rahman, meteorologist, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Rangpur, Md. Walid Arshad, sub divisional engineer of BWDB and KhorshedAlamSarker, DD of DAE here respectively.
Earlier, MarcoChini, scientist of LIST, did a presentation through multimedia projector.
Union Parishadchairmen Md. Mozaffar Hossain, Abdul KayumSarder, AzharulHannan and Aminul Islam coming from Kuri gram district took part in the discussion.
Almost all participants who are playing roles in the society as stakeholders participated in the discussion that was held on how to reach the messages regarding flood forecasting to the decision makers.
After elaborate discussion, a number of recommendations were adopted in a bid to run the flood forecasting system effectively.
DD of Local Government division here Md. ShorifulAlam in his concluding speeches said collaborative approach is indispensable to make the flood forecasting system a grand success in the comman areas and sought wholehearted cooperation of all to attain the cherished goals of the system.
