River erosion forces a good number of people homeless in Kurigram

A total of 16 Rivers including the Dharla, Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dudkumar, Gangadhar,Sonavory and Zinzeram is flowing through Kurigram district.Water level of these rivers swell in the rainy season due to heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upper catchment and River erosion begin forcing a good number of River side poor people to be homeless and landless here every year.

The River erosion is going on in several points in the district forcing a good number of people to be homeless.The Riverside people are passing their days in panic.

The Dudkumar and Gangadhar Rivers are engulfing houses, croplands, orchards, bamboo bush and other establishments at Murea,Ansarhat,Sardarre vita,Kutibamondanga,chit Maleani and wapda area under Bamondanga union of Nageswariupazila.

Talking to local Bablu Miah 35, Monsur Ali 33 and SamsulHaque 41 told that the Dudkumar River has been eroding rapidly for the last seven days. If it is not protected, a good number of houses and croplands will go in to gorge of the River, they frustrated.

The Gangadhar River is eroding at Majhipara,Randatta under Ballaverkhas union and Balarhat union of Narayanpur union and the River erosion is going on here. Meanwhile several houses including a templeeroded here.

Sub-Assistant Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board TouhidSarwar said the work of a project is going on to protect the River erosion prone area at Murea, Ansarhat under Bamondanga union and Balarhat under Narayanpur union.The emergency work will be completed periodically in the erosion prone area.

Chairman of Begumganj union under UlipurupazilaBablu Miah said the Brahmaputra River eroded around 400/450 houses within the last two months and the erosion is going on. Local Hafez AbdusSabur 28 and Shahjahan Ali of village Kanapara under the union told that the Dharla River eroded major portion of the Mollarhat bazar and vast tract of crop land here and Begumganj union may be erased from the map in future,they opined.

Chairman of Bazra UP Abdul KaiyumSardar said the Teesta River is engulfing at KhamarDamar hat char and a government Primary School at present. The River is also eroding at Shaheber Alga and Gander Alga under the upazia.

Chairman of Nayarhat UP under ChilmariupazilaAsaduzzaman said the mighty and gulping River Brahmaputra eroded Chalk Bazar,UttarKhaurear char EbtadayeMadrasha,Khaurea School and college and a Mahila Market. A total of 132 houses have already been eroded with the last 30 days and around 70/80 houses of Bazra Dear khata and Kheruar char have been shifted to safer place due to fear of erosion.

The Brahmaputra River is also eroding at Natarkandi,Goaler char under Austomirchar union and Ghughumaru,Khedaimari,SukherBati,Doikhawar char under Char Shoulmari UP of Roumariupazila

Chairman of Kodalkati union under RajibpurupazilaHumayunKabir told that the Brahmaputra River is eroding at Uttar Kodalkari,ShankorMadhabpur,Sajai and Kodalkati bazar para and more than 30 houses have been eroded within the last 15 days. The River hit victims took shelter on high lands as well as the houses of others.
