DU’s former VC at the Liberation War commemoration ceremony at PUST

Bangmata Begum FazilatunNechhaMujib medalist academician and environmental scientist who is the former first woman vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, highlighting her role in Swadhin Bangla Betar Center during the liberation war, DrNasrin Ahmad said, “I escaped with some freedom fighters in May 1971 and joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Kolkata.

The former VC said these things while speaking at the Liberation War commemoration ceremony of PUST campus on Saturday.

PUST’s deputy director of public relations and publication office said in a press release sent to the media that the former VC presented the detailed activities including management of Swadhin Bangla Betar Center in a small two-storey building in Baliganj, programme technique, construction, promotion.

In the commemorative event, the events before 1971, liberation war, Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’s gauragganth were recited in the gallery-2 of the university.

Word fighter prof.Dr. Nasrin Ahmad, president of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’s Pathak Forum, was secretary of common room affairs in Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) in

  1. She used to read news at SwadhinBangla beta Kendra under the pseudonym Zerina Ahmed during the liberation war.

Since 1962 in Dhanmondi,` I have seen Bangabandhu from close quarters with the family of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and NasrinAhmad living side by side. Nasrin Ahmad’s house was later donated to the Bangabandhu Museumby her family

The former VC also said that` `many people including AminulHaqueBadsha, Kamal Lohani, AlamgirKumkum, Parveen Hossain were associated with Betar Kendra. It became well organised and many more joined within a few days. They were also used pseudonyms for security reasons.

I first used to read news with my name Nasrin Ahmad Shilu6, December.  After the independence of the country, the SwadhinBanglabetar Center programme started in Dhaka from December 22.”

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’s songs, dramas, news, and all programmes including extreme letters inspired the freedom fighters. As a result, the liberation war was accelerated.At that time, the skills and Bengali language of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra were united. Freedom people used to listen to the programmes of SwadhinBanglabetar Kendra like mesmerised. All the announcements of the expatriate government were circulated, she added.

The glory, sacrifice and patriotism of the freedom fighters were highlighted in the small two-storied building of Baliganj. All writing, reading news and sleeping were done there. MR Akhtar Mukul used to sleep there after campaigning by writing extreme letters.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr.HafizaKhatunin the president’s said, `that  we need to do research on the role of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. The heroism of those involved in this should be highlighted in textbooks and the history should be told to future generations.
