The tug-of-war over Fazli Mango Geographical Indication (GI) rights has come to an end. Mango has been re-declared as ‘Mango of Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj’.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Registrar of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry following a hearing on Tuesday (May 24). The full verdict will be officially announced on Sunday (May 29), confirmed the chief scientific officer of the Rajshahi Fruit Research Center Alim Uddin.

Tuesday (May 24) afternoon on the mobile phone. Alim Uddin said a hearing was held at the Patent, Design and Trademark Department of the Industries Ministry to address the demands of the two districts surrounding Fazli Am. Both sides have presented their data. In all respects, the ministry has declared Fazli Mango as ‘Mango of Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj’.

However, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry has been directed to take recourse within the next two months if any party has any objection to this verdict. In the absence of any objection, the GI product Fazli Mango will be published in the new Geographical Indication or Geographical Indication (GI) Gazette in two months.

It may be mentioned that on October 6 last year, ‘Rajshahi’s Fazli Mango’ was recognized as a geographical indicator product. This recognition was given in the context of the application of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center. The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry publishes it in their Geographical Identification (GI) Journal No. 10 (Registration and Protection) under Section 12 of the Act-2013.

An application for recognition was made on March 9, 2016. But on behalf of Chapainawabganj, Fazli Am was opposed by claiming Chapainawabganj. The hearing was organized by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry.

Rajshahi Fruit Research Center Chief Scientific Officer took part in the hearing on Tuesday (May 24). Alim Uddin. Munjer Alam, general secretary of Chapainawabganj Agricultural Association, took part in the hearing on behalf of Chapainawabganj.

The hearing was presided over by the Registrar of the Patent, Design and Trademark Department of the Ministry of Industries at 11 a.m. today. Authorities announced the verdict around 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
