Police have arrested an accused named Md Arif Sarkar Rabbi (28) in connection with the murder of a shop owner at New Market in Rajshahi.
SI Boalia Model Police Station Md Nurul Islam and allied forces arrested him after conducting a raid in Pabartipur police station area of Dinajpur district at 4:30 pm on Saturday .
Arrested Md Arif Sarkar is the son of Selim Sarkar of Baya Bishnu turn of Airport Police Station of Rabbi metropolis. At present, he is a resident of Assam Colony, Rabri, Chandrima Police Station.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Rafiqul Alam, spokesperson of the city police, confirmed the information on Sunday afternoon.
He said Riaz had been trading shoes and sandals for a long time by setting up shop on the sidewalk on the north side of Gate No. 1 of New Market in the sixth floor area of Boalia police station. At 8pm this year (March 21), 8-9 people premeditatedly abused Riaz and his younger brother Rinku over the occupation of vacant space next to his shop.
When Riaz forbade them to abuse him, they beat him with a GI pipe, a hammer in their hands, and randomly cut Riaz and his younger brother Rinku with choppers and knives, seriously injuring them. The locals rushed to their shouts but they fled.
They later rescued Riaz and Rinku and admitted them to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital. Riaz died while undergoing treatment there. Riaz’s father Md Madhu Sheikh filed a murder case with Boalia Model Police Station. The rabbi had been on the run since the case was filed.
He was finally arrested from Pabartipur police station area of Dinajpur district at 4 pm on Saturday.
He was handed over to the court on Sunday morning, the city police spokesman said.
