The demand of watermelon has been increased in Ifter itemsin the holy month of Ramadan as it is very tasty and mitigates thirsty.

Bumper production of watermelon in the southern parts of the country. Watermelon are brought to Kurigram from Bhola.Patualhali and Barishal district.Now it is being sold in the northern districts including Kurigram.It is flooded at Kathalbari,Kurigram Zia Market,poura market and all the other eight upazilas in the district.

Watermelon is being sold at Taka 40/- per kg everywhere. Traders said the price of watermelon including carrying cost has been increased like previous years. Consequently, the price is high.

Several traders said at first when watermelon appeared in the market was not demandable but it is now very demandable due to holy month of Ramadan and hot spell of weather. It is liked especially in Ifteritem. Most of the people of Kurigram purchase watermelon after marketing of vegetables, fishes and other items. Several hundreds of watermelon is being sold daily, traders said.

Watermelon purchaser Saiful Islam 46, Ramzanali 45 and Biplob 50 told this correspondent that we purchase it from Primary Training Institute (PTI) gate near Kurigrampoura market now and then as our family members like it very much.

Watermelon is not only tasty but also it is very good for health. Watermelon contains Lycopene,Amino acid,vitamin, potassium, magnesium and water. In addition, a good amount of anti-oxidant is also in it.

In a statistics, it was found that anti-oxidant of watermelon reduce the risk of stroke and it helps to reduce high blood pressure.There is no fat in the watermelon.
