200 houses eroded by the Brahmaputra River in Kurigram

The mighty and gulping River Brahmaputra is eroding at Nayarhat union under Chilmariupazila in Kurigram and more than 200 houses, cropland and trees have already been eroded within the last one month. The River hit victims are passing their days in sub human condition.

Uttar Khaurear char EbtedayeMadrasha and a School and College have been eroded. Uttar Khaurear char government primary school, a Jami mosque including 150 families are being threatened by the river erosion. A total of 500 hectares of croplands have already been eroded, agriculture officials said.

The local valiant Freedom Fighter and also a retired head teacher of government primary school Insaf Ali told that the Brahmaputra River is engulfing in full swing and my house is also near the river which may erode at any moment. Now I along with my family members are very busy to shift my houses and other belongings to other safer places.

Chairman of Nayarhat union council Md. Asaduzzaman (Asad) told this correspondent that the houses of around 100 families ofBazra Dear khata have been eroded by the gulping River Brahmaputra with the last one month. Char Gorarkuti government primary school and Natunhaat shed are being threatened. Some 25 families of char Khedaimari areas have also been eroded.The River water is increasing. Many seedling fields and low lying areas of GaynarPotolare inundated. A Non-Government Organization named Friendship has distributed relief materials among 825 families recently.

Chilmari UNO Mahbubar Rahman and DC SaidulArif visited on the spot and also distributed relief materials among River hit victims recently, chairman of Nayarhat union council Md. Asaduzzaman (Asad) said.

Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board Abdullah Al Mamun told this correspondent that GEO Bags are being thrown there to protect erosion. Meanwhile more than 8500 GEO Bags have been thrown and the work is going on till now.
