2 Russian employees at Rooppur nuclear power plant die

Two Russian nationals working at the Rooppur nuclear power plant of Ishwardi in Pabna died early Saturday.

The deceased are Schukin Pavel, 48, mechanical engineer of sub-contractor company Trest Rossem, and Tolmasoff  Vassiliev, 59, installer of another company SMU-1.

Both of them were residents of Green City Project, housing project for the Russian officials of the power plant

The incident took place inside the multi-storey building of the Green City residential project for foreigners between 2 and 3 pm on Friday. Police recovered their bodies from the Upazila Health Complex on Saturday morning.

Chukin Pavel, 48, a mechanical engineer at a Russian subcontractor called `Trust Rosem’, fell ill at the Rooppur nuclear power plant around 3pm on Friday, police said. He was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex from Green City project where doctors declared him dead. Police believe he may have died from alcoholism.

Meanwhile, at around 2 am, a installer of another sub-contractor named SMU-1 of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, Talmasef Vyaselv,59, fell down the stairs while descending from the 14th floor. He died on the spot. The company’s own doctor later pronounced him dead. Police believe he may have died of a heart attack.

Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi police station confirmed the incident and said the duo bodies would be sent home through the embassy after the autopsy.

One week ago, two Russian nationals were killed two days apart in the Rooppur nuclear power plant project. Barchenko Alexei died while undergoing treatment at Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex on Friday night and Shakirov Alexei died on Wednesday while sleeping in the bedroom of the project’s Green City residential building.
