A Pabna court on Friday sent 23 people to jail after seizing 12 trucks loaded with huge quantity of Indian sugar at Kazirhat Ferry Ghat in Aminpur, Pabna.
Earlier, Pabna district detective branch of police (DB) seized 12 trucks loaded with 242 tonnesof Indian sugar at Kazirhat Ferry Ghat in Aminpur police station in Bera upazila of Pabna on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, 23 people including the driver and helper of the trucks were arrested.
Deno Roy, sub-inspector of DB police on Friday morning field a case with Apinpur police station in special act in this regard Pabna Superintendent of Police (SP) Akbar Ali Munshi confirmed to reporters that these trucks and drivers and helpers were arrested from Kazirhat Ferry ghat area around 7 pm on Thursday.
A police source said on condition of anonymity that the trucks loaded with Indian sugar were entering North Bengal through Sylhet’s Jayantpur border.It was being supplied to various parts of North Bengal through Aricha in Manikganj and Kazirhat Ghat in Pabna.
DB police in Pabna had already taken position based on secret information.These trucks are believed to have at least 250 metric tonnes of sugar.
Confirming the matter, Pabna SP Akbar Ali Munshi told New Age that the trucks loaded with Indian sugar crossed Arichaghat and reached Kazirhatghat in Pabna and were detained by the DB Police.
At that time, they could not show the valid documents of the goods.They were later seized and 23 people were arrested.
The arrested 23 people on Friday have been sent to jail through the court, said Imran Mahmud Tuhin, officer-in-charge of DB Police.
